First Works
Carol wrote her first book when she was eight – an adventure story – the kind where intrepid children explore a beach and discover a secret tunnel that leads to an island. Mystery ensues. When she wasn’t writing or reading, Carol would be drawing cartoon characters, and these played out endless stories in her imagination.
At school, Carol’s favourite subjects were English and Art, though in her senior years, she abandoned them for the ‘more practical’ Maths and Science. When school was out, she and her friends would be on one of Sydney’s northern beaches, slathering on the baby oil and basting in the sun (bad idea), listening to pop songs, and fighting off bees trying to swan-dive into their cans of soft drink.
University and Beyond
Carol came out of Sydney University with a Bachelor of Science, and after pursuing a career in information technology, she established a marketing services company, and worked as a freelance business writer and on personal writing projects.
The Arts had always kept their special place in Carol’s heart and she ended up back in school – this time, at UNSW. She gained an MA in Theatre; wrote Beneath the Sequined Surface, a book on Sydney drag; completed a PhD; and lectured in Theatre Studies.
